In 1995 the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce and the Turks & Caicos Hotel & Tourism Association banded together to form the Law & Order Committee due to concerns about crime. Other community interest associations joined and the committee acted as an advisory and lobby group with the Turks & Caicos Islands Government and the Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force.
Committee member John Bowers of Johnston International advised that their Chairman, Sir Michael, now Lord Ashcroft, had started and Chaired Crimestoppers Trust in the UK. As the Turks & Caicos is such a small country there were real concerns about protecting the anonymity of persons reporting information about a crime. This was resolved when Crime Stoppers Cayman Islands introduced us to Crime Stoppers Miami-Dade. With the assistance of Colin Cross of Cable & Wireless, now LIME, our toll free 1-800-TIPS (8477) number was organized so that it could be answered by Crime Stoppers Miami-Dade in the USA to ensure that a caller’s voice would not be recognized. In 1996 Crime Stoppers Turks & Caicos was launched with the generous assistance and technical support of Crime Stoppers Miami-Dade, LIME and donations from Lord Ashcroft and many others.
Crime Stoppers Turks & Caicos is a non-profit association established for Charitable Purposes and is registered as a Section 78 (1) Charity under the Turks & Caicos Islands Companies Ordinance 1981. Our Registration Number is 11906.
